Summer 2020 Playlist: Unicorn Milk

Summer 2020 Playlist: Unicorn Milk

I’m sure you’re probably wondering what the heck “unicorn milk” means and why it’s the name of this playlist. Well…this summer has been interesting, to say the least. Scratch that…2020 has been interesting! Due to COVID-19, obviously, this is the first summer that I haven’t really traveled. A couple of trips were canceled, for instance. Also, despite being a teacher who normally has summers off, I have still been quite busy throughout most of this summer, as there has been constant communication and work done in anticipation of and preparation for restarting school virtually. I decided to post this entry today, as my summer unofficially came to an end today with the first day of school, albeit virtually.

With that said, a bright spot for my summer despite the new lowkey normal created by the pandemic has been a playlist that was created by myself and someone that I’ve grown close to this summer. It was his idea primarily, and the playlist name is an inside joke(his humor). Don’t try to figure it out; you won’t! I actually feel that the playlist’s name perfectly fits in with the “crazy” theme of this year. I was surprised with the playlist via Spotify back in June. It subsequently moved to Apple Music, and immediately became my summer soundtrack. I can say with certainty that I have listened to this playlist more than anything else this summer. He created it and sent it to me one day; initially, it only contained 11 songs. Old and new. The more time passed, the more we would share songs with each other and/or make suggestions on songs to add…some real music nerd stuff! Haha. As I type, Unicorn Milk has 48 songs on it. Even though I easily could, I will not be highlighting all 48 songs here for your sake. This entry will be highlighting some of the songs on the playlist that were actually released this year. Separate entries will follow with other songs from the playlist.

I’ve created an abbreviated version of Unicorn Milk if you prefer to listen to the songs that way while you read. Enjoy!

The Songs

Listen, I loved the original version of this song already early in the year. This acoustic version, though, is what I’ve been listening to on the playlist all summer. As the creator of Unicorn Milk put it, the original version is for the beach, and this acoustic version is for the bungalow. It mentally takes me somewhere else, which has been great in this summer of COVID, when actual travel has been scarce.
Figured I’d keep the H.E.R. vibes going. Perfect summer song, as it samples a reggae classic, Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam”, which evokes a lot of nostalgia of past summers. Plus, I love the lyrics.
This is one of the original 11 songs he put on the playlist. One of those songs that I wish was longer. Just beautiful with a profound meaning.
I just love this song! The lyrics, her delivery of them, the beat, the melody, etc. Summer love, “in my feelings” vibes. Also wish this one was longer.
This particular song was one of my contributions to the playlist. Kevin has such a pleasant voice; I love his tone! Otherwise, the lyrics and melody are what do it for me with this song. It has an old school vibe to it. Standout lyric: I know this was heaven sent, I don’t believe in coincidence.
Just a beautifully mellow love song. The vocals and the beat do a lot for me. Plus, on a totally superficial note, the video is adorable!
Self-explanatory song about the love shared between two people. Ledisi never disappoints vocally or lyrically, and this song is no exception. It is breathtaking. PJ Morton was a wonderful addition.
Another one of my contributions to Unicorn Milk. Again, lyrics and melody for the win!
Everything about this song is love. When the beat kicks in, the song is taken to another level. And the meaning though!
Another of my contributions! This song screams 90s/early 2000s for me, which is partially why I like it so much. Even though it is a 2020 song, it gives me vibes of past summers.
Figured I would end this with another song featuring H.E.R. I love the production on this one: the beat is unique and the lyrics are so meaningful. Love it.

I will leave this entry with these 11 songs. Yes, there’s a common theme here…summer 2020 has certainly been unlike any other, but not bad for me personally by any means.
